How I Turned My Passion for PR into a Career
Aug 15, 2024From Law to PR: A New Beginning
My career started in law, working as a civil litigator at a prestigious firm. However, despite the success, it always felt more like a job than a career. Raised by parents who worked from home, the entrepreneurial spirit was ingrained in me from a young age, and the traditional path of law never quite fit.
A turning point came after experiencing a traumatizing 'Me Too' moment at my firm. This incident profoundly affected me, making me realize that I needed a change—not just for my professional growth but for my personal wellbeing.
My transition into public relations began when I stumbled upon a fragrance company that intrigued me. After reaching out to the founder, I came up with a PR strategy that successfully landed a press mention in a notable column. The tangible impact of this work contrasted starkly with what I felt in law, sparking a realization: I could get paid for doing something I genuinely enjoyed!
This initial success led me to take the plunge and start reaching out to beauty brands, slowly carving a niche for myself in the beauty industry. My early days were about building a reputation, often working for less to gain valuable experience. However, I set strict time limits on this underpriced work, ensuring it was a stepping stone, not a permanent fixture.
After five years of running my business and before I even started a family, I appreciated the flexibility my career offered, which became even more valuable once I became a mom. This personal achievement has fueled my passion to teach other women that balancing motherhood and a successful career is not only possible but entirely achievable.
For those interested in entering the PR field, here are my top three tips:
- Niche Down: Identify who you serve and how. Starting out might require some free or below-market work to gain experience, but set a clear time limit on this.
- Start Your Own Agency: Move away from hourly billing to a retainer model. It’s more profitable and sustainable. You don't need a big corporation set up from the start; just begin!
- Leverage Past Experiences: My program, Lead to Landed, is designed to take your past experiences and catapult you into your future in PR. Remember, you’re not starting from scratch!
