What Does a PR Career Really Look Like?

Feb 08, 2021

A PR career can be a fantastic choice, especially if you want to own a business and work in your zone of genius. If you’re ready to make a change and do something that you LOVE every single day, public relations might be the right move for you!

With PR, you’re able to create flexibility and diversity in your daily routine. Plus, you have the opportunity to dive into a niche that you’re genuinely passionate about.

But what does a day in the life of a PR professional actually look like?

Having owned my agency for 16 years now, I want to share what this career could look like for you daily. Starting my agency was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and it could be the same for you.

In today’s blog post, I’ll share what daily life in a PR career might look like, some of the tasks and responsibilities you’ll have, and what makes PR so rewarding. Let’s get started!

What Does a PR Career Look Like?

What is it like to work in PR? I’m in my office every day, and sometimes, there are super consistent tasks I perform every day. For example, each week, I do Facebook Live chats in our Profitable PR Pros community to support other professionals. I love sales, so I work on that aspect while my team prioritizes fostering media relationships.

But it's not always the same thing!

Depending on where you are in your agency, you’ll probably work on several different types of projects.

PR is the kind of career that can truly be what you want it to be. You can double down on things that you love and delegate the things outside your passions.

Daily Task Examples for PR Professionals

As a publicist, you’ll spend a lot of time in front of your computer and email inbox. If you work remotely, everything will be online, so it’s crucial that you love spending time on your computer.

On the other hand, a PR career is full of interaction with people! Since you’ll be focused on growing and scaling your agency, you’ll need to bring in new clients. That means working on lots of outreach and marketing efforts.

Every day, you’ll work on client services and strategizing PR campaigns.

You’ll develop pitches with unique story angles and meaningful connections to journalists and publications. You’ll work on educating yourself every single day to become better at what you do. You’ll also need to work on tracking your pitches, follow-ups, and other metrics to see how you can grow.

A PR career means lots of connecting with outlets and freelancers (and following up!). That’s why relationship building and client communication are really important.

Most likely, you’ll spend time creating content for your clients, doing industry and trend research, and generating metrics reports.

There will also be a LOT of meetings!

PR is a service, so you need to connect with the right clients to be successful. Communication is really essential, so meetings provide you an opportunity to strategize in the right way.

Why a PR Career Is A Fantastic Choice

A PR career changed my life for the better. I’m able to balance my personal life, being a mom, with my dream professional life running my own business. For 16 years, I’ve been able to work specifically in areas that I actually am passionate about.

Building a PR career lets you hone in on a specific niche that you’re really excited about.

When you love the work that you’re doing, you’ll be happier (and more successful!) You can generate exceptional results for your clients because you’re genuinely excited about what you’re doing.

Another huge benefit to PR is the flexibility and freedom. When you build a PR career, you give yourself control over your time and your life. You can work from home, create a team to support you, and find your dream clients.

You determine your schedule, so you can build in time for your personal life and what matters to you.

Every single day, you decide how your tasks will fall in your day. You’re able to work when you feel the most energized, take breaks, and focus on little tasks and big picture items as you see fit.

Part of what makes PR so rewarding is generating results for your clients. The feeling that comes with landing press and helping businesses grow is absolutely amazing.

As you develop your foundational pitching skills, you’ll be able to create results consistently. This lets you draw in more of your ideal clients and build a successful, profitable agency to serve you and your family.
